One day to learn the basics of knife carving
Knife carving figurines is an incredibly accessible and creative way to enter the wonderful world of wood carving.
This one-day workshop, led by Antoine Maussion, will allow you to learn all the basics of knife carving and go home with two figurines.
Content and objectives:
Requiring no prerequisites, this course is specifically designed for beginners in figurine carving with little to no experience using hand tools.
Program of the day:
Morning: The basics of carving
- Safety introduction: Learn the correct gestures and appropriate tools to carve safely.
- First steps: Discover the basic techniques of knife wood carving and create your first figurine—a fish or a Santa sock depending on the season. You will learn how to bring your first shapes to life.
Afternoon: Deepening skills and creation
- A new challenge: Put your newly acquired skills into practice by carving a small Santa head, a more complex piece that will help you develop your creativity.
- Sharpening: Learn how to maintain your tool and understand the importance of regular sharpening for precise results.
- Larger projects: Discuss with Antoine the technical specifics involved in creating larger-scale sculptures.
Objectives of the course:
- Understanding wood: Learn about the different wood species used in carving, their characteristics, and how to work with them.
- Mastering techniques: Discover basic gestures, essential tools, and safe postures for confident carving.
- Developing creativity: Let your imagination run free and create unique, personalized pieces.
You will leave with your own creations and the knowledge needed to continue learning. In a small group, you will benefit from individualized guidance to progress at your own pace.
Please note:
- All tools and accessories required for the activity are provided during the course (knives, cut-resistant gloves, carving wood).
- You may bring your own lunch if you wish; otherwise, you can take your break at nearby shops.
