Yann Gandon

Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

My name is Yann Gandon, a French self-taught designer and artisan. I opened my furniture design studio in 2020, first in New Zealand, then in Copenhagen, Denmark. Before fully diving into the world of design, my professional background spanned a wide range of fields. At a decisive moment, however, I made a clear choice to redirect my career toward furniture creation.

With renewed energy and a strong commitment to my craft, I approach each project with curiosity and an open, almost innocent perspective, constantly exploring creativity through making.

What is your story with L’Établisienne?

When I returned from New Zealand, I contacted Laurence to propose the workshop “Build Your Own Chair”, which I had already run successfully there. Laurence was immediately receptive, and we quickly began collaborating.

What do you do there?

Together with Laurence, we developed two workshops: “Build Your Own Wooden Chair” and “Make Your Own Wooden Vase.” These workshops allow participants to discover design thinking and creativity, while also learning about woodworking and the fabrication of functional objects.

What is:

Your favorite material?

Solid wood, especially New Zealand species such as Rimu.

Your favourite tool?

A pencil.

Your favorite gesture?

Hand-planing wood.
