Ruben Tuil

Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

My name is Ruben Bellini. I’ve been a cabinetmaker for over 15 years, and five years ago I trained in Japanese craftsmanship. I now run my own company, Fuji Wood furniture where I create pieces inspired by a Franco-Japanese approach to woodworking.

What is your story with L’Établisienne?
I first started by occasionally renting a workbench to work on my own projects. Over time, I offered to lead workshops, as sharing and passing on my know-how really matters to me.

What do you do there?
I run an introduction to kumiko / 組子 a Japanese woodworking art that dates back several centuries and is used to create complex and elegant geometric patterns. I’m also keen to introduce other aspects of Japanese craftsmanship in the future.

What is:

Your favorite material?
Wood—especially the cedar family, which is a pleasure to work with and has a very distinctive scent.

Your favorite tool?
The Japanese hand plane, called Kanna / 鉋. It requires precision, skill, and careful adjustment.

ton objet préféré ?
A pencil, because it allows me to express my ideas.

Your favorite gesture?
Using the Japanese plane: planing towards yourself to achieve a smooth, clean surface without the need for sanding.
